Processing and gathering data
Initial phase includes gathering of existing data concerning selected endangered species and habitat types. Those will be basics for future ecological network development.
Mapping and Analysis
The main source of the data on habitat types is Habitat Map 1:100.000, prepared by OIKON ltd.-Institute for Applied Ecology, in the framework of the project “Habitat Mapping of Croatia”. Source of data for “key” species are materials gathered through the process of preparing red data books on threatened plant and animal species. In cooperation with experts and scientists, additional data on sites important for particular threatened species will be gathered.
In the initial phase indicative map of NEN should be prepared as a part of the Pan-European Ecological Network (PEEN). This will be accomplished by upgrading the already existing Visegrad 4+2 regional ecological network map (prepared in 2002). Data collected are data on key species for PEEN (species which require large areas and are indicators for certain habitat types and migratory species).
Next step is analysis of the data for species and habitat types listed on Habitat and Bird Directive Annexes with purpose of evaluating and selecting NATURA 2000 potential sites. Gathered data are entered into NATURA 2000 database.
The final phase of the project is development of National Ecological Network. It includes sites for species and habitat types important on national level (Red List). These species and habitat types are not listed on Habitat and Bird Directive Annexes or covered by PEEN.
Every phase of the project will result in proposal of the map (PEEN/NATURA 2000/NEN) with explanations that will than be directed in consultation process. Participation of all stakeholders is expected. After the consultation process, final proposal of the ecological network will be sent to ministry competent for nature protection (Ministry of culture).

Database
Informatics support to data integration and GIS development will be accomplished by creating software for harmonisation of existing standards in all site-related European databases (Emerald, Natura2000, MedWet 2000, SPAMI etc.). This way, functional system that can exchange information with other interested parties on European/national level and perform all adequate data-analysis, will be established. Filling the database by NATURA 2000 standards will help Croatia in preparing all the necessary documents for the EU accession process.
An SQL database, with purpose of organising all data relevant for the formation of the CRO-NEN project, will be developed soon. That work is being done by the project partner Oikon – Institute for applied ecology. Besides that task, database was designed to serve as a tool for supporting needs of NATURA 2000, Emerald and MedWet databases regarding the preconditioned data input and reports. Database will also contain spatial information, stored using the ESRI platform syntax.
