Monitoring Biodiversity
On 10th and 11th of March 2005, organized by State Institute for Nature Protection, a Seminar on "Monitoring of Biodiversity" was held as a part of LIFE III project-"Building-up the National Ecological Network as a Part of the Pan-European Ecological Network & NATURA 2000 Network” (project acronym CRO-NEN).
First day subject was "Building up the National System for Monitoring Biodiversity (NSMB)".
Seminar was attended by Ministry of Culture- Nature Protection Directorate representatives and representatives from other interested Ministries (Ministry of environmental protection, physical planning and construction; Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management; Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integrations), public authorities for managing protected areas (National Parks, Nature Parks, Regional public institutions), Croatian Forests, Croatian Waters, scientists, NGO-s, schools etc…(List of participants)
Introductory lecture on "Slovenian experiences in NATURA 2000 programme" was held by Peter Skoberne, PhD, from Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
Mrs. Jasminka Radovic, Head of Expertise Division of State Institute for Nature Protection and CRO-NEN Project Manager, held a lecture on "Building up National system for monitoring biodiversity initiative" and Mr. Kristijan Čivić from State Institute for Nature Protection, a lecture on "Examples of National system for monitoring of biodiversity in other countries (Hungary and Netherlands)".

Lectures in the second part of the Seminar covered the existing programmes for monitoring in Croatia and were held as follows:
Vesna Tutiš, PhD, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)-Department of Ornithology: Methodology and basics for building up monitoring of birds
Jelena Kralj, PhD, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)-Department of Ornithology: Implementation and results of bird monitoring in Croatia
Ratko Matošević, Croatian Forests: Programme of Forests Certification and obligations to biodiversity monitoring
Gorana Ćosić-Flajsig, Croatian Waters: Water Framework Directive and demands according to monitoring of protected areas
After these lectures, five minute interpretations and suggestions concerning present experiences in monitoring of biodiversity were given by potential participants in National Biodiversity Monitoring System.
During the final discussion, conclusions of the Seminar have been drafted. This draft document will be distributed to all interested parties for their final suggestions and input.
Second day subject was "Monitoring areas of ecological network- role of Public Institutions in management of protected areas".
Mr. Neven Trenc from State Institute for Nature Protection, held a presentation on "Role of Nature Protection Information System in the process of monitoring of protected areas" in which he presented the scheme, structure, connections and exchange of data in future nature protection information system.
Mrs Jasminka Radović held a presentation on "Protected areas as part of National Ecological Network and EU network-NATURA 2000, and monitoring obligations". National and Nature Parks were assessed as potential NATURA 2000 network sites. A significant lack of information on species and habitat types listed in Bird and Habitat Directive annexes (important for evaluation of NATURA2000 potential sites) has been determined. It has been agreed that Public Authorities will submit all recent inventory data to the State Institute for Nature Protection, in order to gather relevant information needed for assesment of each protected site.
Mrs Sandra Prskalo from Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund (FZOEU) gave a brief presentation on possibilities of using funds from FZOEU for co-financing projects on protection of biological and landscape diversity.

Swallows 2005 - Seminar for Biology Teachers in Elementary Schools
On 7th and 8th of May 2005 Seminar "Involving Schools in National Biodiversity Monitoring System – Counting nests of Swallows and House Martins" was held in cooperation with Croatian Ornithological Society.
Fallowing the very successful last year action Counting Swallows' and House Martins' Nests and due to the great interest from schools, State Institute for Nature Protection decided to continue the action in the framework of CRO-NEN project thus start a real monitoring.
For the schools willing to participate in the program, maps and forms were developed for the selected areas.
Areas for the continuation of the action were selected according to the number of schools involved in the last year action. Using this method, Karlovačka, Krapinsko-zagorska, Međimurska, Osječko-baranjska, Sisačko-moslavačka and Zagrebačka counties were selected.
Based on contacts with teachers and their will to participate, on 7th and 8th of May in cooperation with Croatian Ornithological Society, seminar titled Schools in National Biodiversity Monitoring System - Counting Swallows' and House Martins' Nests was held.

Attending this seminar is recognized as professional training according to the Ordinance on advancement of teachers in primary and secondary schools (Official Gazette 89/95) and participation in nest counting action is valued as extracurricular work according to the same ordinance. State Institute for Nature Protection issued a certificate to all seminar participants and additional certificate will be issued to those who deliver data on implementation of the nest counting action.
On the firs day of the seminar lectures were held in Panorama hotel.
Opening lecture "CRO-NEN Project and National Biodivesity Monitoring Programme" was given by Jasminka Radović, project manager. Project associate Petra Rodić held a presentation of the last year action and its results. Jelena Kralj from the Croatian Ornithological Society gave a lecture titled "Monitoring of Swallows and House Martins" explaining the methodology for monitoring in detail.
After the short brake, Society member Maša Ljuština presented their project "Birds our Neighbours". The purpose of the project was to inform the children on bird species in the city (Swallows, House Martins, Falcons, Pigeons etc.) and problems in their protection.
After the lectures, seminar participants visited a building in Siget with one of the biggest House Martins colonies in Zagreb. The group also visited a rural settlement in the vicinity, where Swallows were found in old stables.

On the second day participants were taken on a field trip to Lonjsko polje Nature Park. In Mužilovčica village, the group visited the only House Martins’ colony in the area. Swallows’ nests were observed in the stables nearby. Head of park’s expertise division gave some details on the Park and species living there and accompanied the group to European village of Storks Čigoć and flooded area of the Park.
